IPTV on a Samsung or LG, nothing extra plugged in
If your television is a Samsung from 2018 onwards or an LG from roughly 2017 onwards, this runs from the set's own app store with no additional hardware and no second remote. This covers both platforms, including the MAC address activation some apps require.
Before you start
- A Samsung running Tizen from 2018 or later, or an LG running webOS 3.5 or later
- The television on your network, ideally by Ethernet, otherwise 5 GHz Wi-Fi
- Your login details, or your M3U URL for the MAC-based apps
- A phone or laptop nearby for the one-time activation, if you use Set IPTV or Net IPTV
- About eleven minutes
Which app to use
- IPTV Smarters ProOn both stores where supported. Standard Xtream Codes loginFree
- Set IPTVVery stable on Samsung and LG. Activated once with the TV MAC addressSmall one-off
- Net IPTVSimilar to Set IPTV and a good fallback if one is missingSmall one-off
- Smart STBEmulates a portal box if you prefer that interfaceSmall one-off
Setting up Samsung or LG Smart TV
Follow these in order. If a step does not match what you see on screen, send us a photo and we will tell you which one you are actually on.
Check the set can install apps
On Samsung open the Apps tile from the home row and look for a search icon. On LG open the LG Content Store. If neither offers a search function, your set is almost certainly too old, so skip to the last step for the cheap workaround.
Search for a player
Try "IPTV Smarters Pro" first. If it is not listed for your model, search "Set IPTV", then "Net IPTV", then "Smart STB". Availability varies by region and model year, which is normal and not a fault. Any one of them does the job.
Install it and open it once
Most of these apps open on a screen showing the television MAC address and, for the MAC-based ones, a message telling you to upload a playlist on their website. Leave the television on that screen while you do the next step.
For Xtream Codes apps: enter the login
In IPTV Smarters Pro choose "Login with Xtream Codes API", then type the username, password and portal URL from our WhatsApp message exactly as written. This is the quickest route and it loads the category folders and the on-demand library automatically.
For MAC-based apps: upload the playlist
Note the MAC address on screen. On your phone or laptop open the app developer's activation page, enter that MAC address, paste the M3U URL we sent you, and save. Then restart the app on the television.
Let the channel list load
The first load takes one to three minutes. When it finishes you will see category folders for sport, United States channels, cinema, kids and international, plus the films and series shelves underneath.
Set the quality you want
In the app settings choose your stream quality. If the set is 4K and your connection is quick, pick the UHD feeds. Otherwise choose Full HD deliberately for a steadier picture, which matters most over Wi-Fi.
Favorite your channels and test at peak
Pin the twenty or so channels the household actually watches so you are not scrolling through twenty thousand. Then test a live sports channel in the evening, because that is the real test of any IPTV service on a Smart TV.
Stuck on a step? Send a photo of the screen on WhatsApp along with the step number. That is almost always faster than reading further.
Get help nowThe six things that actually break
These cover almost every support message we get about Samsung or LG Smart TV. Work down the list before messaging us and you will probably not need to.
The app is missing from my store
Availability on Tizen and webOS varies by model year and region, and apps occasionally vanish from the stores entirely. Try the alternatives in order. If none appear, a $40 Firestick in a spare HDMI port is faster than fighting the television.
Installed but will not open
Power-cycle properly: unplug the set at the wall for thirty seconds rather than using standby. That clears the platform cache and fixes most launch failures on both Samsung and LG.
The MAC activation is not recognised
Copy the MAC exactly as the app displays it, including the colons, and check you are on the app developer's own activation site rather than a similarly named one. Send us a photo of the screen and we will complete the upload with you.
Slow channel changes
Smart TV processors are modest, so zapping is slower than on a dedicated box. That is the platform, not your connection. Reducing the app buffer helps a little; an Android box helps a lot if it bothers you.
Picture stutters on Wi-Fi
Televisions have the weakest Wi-Fi radios in the house, because the antenna sits behind a large metal panel. Run an Ethernet cable to the set if you possibly can. It is the single most effective fix on this platform and it is not close.
Channel list looks out of date
Refresh the playlist from the app settings, or remove it and add it again. The catalogue changes weekly and some Smart TV apps cache the old list until forced to reload.
One remote, one input, one compromise
Running IPTV directly on the television is genuinely appealing: one remote, one input, nothing extra plugged in and nothing else to go wrong. For a household that watches a handful of channels and values simplicity, it is the right answer and we would not try to talk you out of it.
The compromise is speed. Smart TV processors are built to a price and the app ecosystems on Tizen and webOS move slowly, so channel changes take a beat longer than on a dedicated box. For football, where flicking between two games is half the point, that beat is noticeable.
Wire it in if you possibly can
Televisions have the worst Wi-Fi radios of anything in the house, because the antenna sits behind a large metal panel, which is exactly the wrong place for it. If there is any realistic way to run an Ethernet cable to the set, do it. If there is not, a pair of powerline adapters costs about fifty dollars and is the next best thing.
When the set is simply too old
A Samsung from 2015 or an LG from 2014 will not install any of these apps, and no amount of persistence changes that. A $40 Fire TV Stick in a spare HDMI port solves it completely and, as a bonus, gives you a much faster interface than the television ever had. The set becomes a screen, which for a panel that age it does very well. Our Firestick guide takes it from there.
About Samsung or LG Smart TV
Will IPTV work on my older Samsung or LG?
Samsung sets from 2018 and LG from around 2017 handle these apps well. Anything older usually cannot install them at all. The cheapest solution is a Fire TV Stick in a spare HDMI port, which also gives you a far quicker interface than the television's own.
Why do some Smart TV apps charge a small fee?
Set IPTV, Net IPTV and Smart STB are independent apps with a one-off license of a few dollars, paid to their developers rather than to us. They are not our products and we get nothing from them. We simply find them the most reliable on this platform.
Do I have to give the app my MAC address?
Only for the MAC-activated apps, and it is simply how they tie a license to one television. A MAC address is a local network identifier and reveals nothing about you personally. Apps that use the Xtream Codes login do not need it.
Is a Smart TV app as good as a Firestick for football?
For picture quality, yes, because the stream is identical. For interface speed, no: a Firestick or Android box changes channels faster and gets app updates more often. The Smart TV advantage is that it needs no extra hardware and no second remote.
What about Sony, TCL, Hisense or Philips televisions?
Most of those run Android TV or Google TV, which is excellent for IPTV, so follow the Android TV and TiviMate guide instead. Roku-based televisions are the awkward exception, because Roku does not permit IPTV player apps at all.
