Setting up Android TV box
Follow these in order. If a step does not match what you see on screen, send us a photo and we will tell you which one you are actually on.
Install TiviMate from Google Play
On the Android TV home screen open the Play Store and search "TiviMate IPTV Player". Install it. This is an official Play Store app, so there is no sideloading, no unknown sources and no APK file to deal with.
Add a playlist
Launch TiviMate, choose "Add playlist" and select "Xtream Codes" rather than M3U. The Xtream Codes option pulls in the category folders and the full on-demand library in one pass; M3U gives you a flat list of twenty thousand channels with no structure.
Enter your credentials
Type the portal URL, username and password from our WhatsApp message exactly as written, because they are case sensitive. If typing with a remote is painful, use the Google TV app on your phone as a keyboard, or pair a Bluetooth keyboard for two minutes.
Let the import finish
TiviMate imports the channel list and the on-demand library. The first import takes one to three minutes. When it completes you will see every category down the left-hand side, with the United States groups and sport near the top.
Hide the groups you will never watch
Settings, Playlists, your playlist, Channel groups, then untick the country packs you have no use for. This is the single best change you can make: the list drops from 315 categories to the dozen your household actually opens.
Set the layout
Settings, Appearance. Choose how the channel list displays and how large the tiles are. Most people switch on the compact list for sport, because more channels fit on screen while a game is playing and you can see what else is on without leaving it.
Raise the buffer for live sport
Settings, Playback, then raise the buffer size one step. You trade a fraction of a second of delay for a picture that holds through the busiest moments of a Sunday afternoon. Nobody has ever noticed half a second. Everybody notices a freeze on a touchdown.
Build favorites, then test at peak
Long-press a channel to add it to favorites and reorder them so the sport you watch sits at the top. Then test a live game between seven and ten in the evening, which is the only test worth running.
Stuck on a step? Send a photo of the screen on WhatsApp along with the step number. That is almost always faster than reading further.
Get help nowThe six things that actually break
These cover almost every support message we get about Android TV box. Work down the list before messaging us and you will probably not need to.
Is TiviMate premium worth paying for?
The free tier plays everything and is fine for one playlist. The one-off premium unlock adds multiple playlists, recording to a USB drive or a network share, and more interface options. It costs a few dollars and is the best money most customers spend on their setup.
The channel list is overwhelming
Hide unwanted groups in Settings, Playlists, Channel groups, then build a favorites list. Thirty seconds of tidying turns 20,633 channels into the two hundred you use.
A channel is missing
Reload the playlist in Settings, Playlists, and check it is not sitting in a group you hid earlier. The catalogue changes weekly, so a reload usually picks up anything recently added.
Stutter during big games
Raise the buffer one step, switch from the 4K feed to Full HD, and use Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi. On an NVIDIA Shield, also switch on "match frame rate" so 60 Hz broadcasts are not converted, which is what causes faint judder on panning shots.
Recording is not working
Recording needs TiviMate premium and somewhere to write to, such as a USB drive or a network share. Point it at that location in Settings, Recordings. Internal storage on most boxes is far too small for a three-hour broadcast.
Sluggish after months of use
Clear the app cache in the Android TV settings and restart the box. Devices with 2 GB of memory also benefit from not having a dozen other streaming apps updating in the background.
The difference you notice every single evening
Most people arrive at IPTV through a Firestick and IPTV Smarters, and that works perfectly well. The ones who care about the details end up on an Android box running TiviMate, and once they do they rarely go back. The differences are not marketing points. They are things you notice every evening.
Channels change in well under a second, so flicking between three games feels like flicking between three channels on a cable box rather than waiting for a buffer. The list is fast to scroll and well laid out. Group management means you never see the fourteen thousand international channels you have no use for. Recording to a USB drive works. And the playback settings expose the buffer, which is the one control that genuinely helps with live sport.
What to actually buy
If money is no object, an NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is the best IPTV device sold in America: Ethernet, plenty of memory, excellent frame rate matching and a support record measured in years rather than months. If value matters more, the Onn 4K box or a Chromecast with Google TV run TiviMate beautifully for a fraction of the price, though the Chromecast needs a USB Ethernet adapter for a wired connection.
Formuler's Z10 and Z11 deserve a mention because they are built specifically for this: Ethernet as standard, a remote with a dedicated app button, and a portal mode if you would rather skip apps entirely.
The three settings that matter
First, hide the channel groups you do not want. It takes thirty seconds and transforms the experience. Second, raise the playback buffer one step if you watch live sport; the added delay is invisible and the stability gain is not. Third, on devices that support it, switch on frame rate matching so broadcast frame rates are not converted, which is what causes that faint judder during panning shots.
Still deciding on hardware? The device comparison puts Android boxes against Firesticks and Smart TV apps, and the match-day section of the sports page covers getting the best picture on a big night.
About Android TV box
What is the best Android box for sport in the US?
The NVIDIA Shield TV Pro, if the price does not bother you: Ethernet, ample memory, frame rate matching and years of updates. The Onn 4K box and Chromecast with Google TV are excellent value and run TiviMate beautifully. Formuler Z10 and Z11 are built specifically for IPTV and include Ethernet as standard.
Is TiviMate better than IPTV Smarters?
Yes, in almost every respect: faster channel changes, better layout, real group management, recording, and proper control over buffering. Smarters is simpler and runs on more platforms, which is why it stays popular on Firesticks.
Can I use TiviMate on a Firestick?
Yes, but it has to be sideloaded because it is not in the Amazon Appstore. It runs well on a 4K Max. If you are choosing hardware from scratch, a proper Android TV device with Play Store access is the smoother route.
Can TiviMate record a game?
With the premium unlock, yes, to a USB drive or a network share. Point it at that location in Settings, Recordings. Internal storage on most boxes will not hold a full game.
Why do channels change so much faster than on my Firestick?
Better hardware and a far better written player. TiviMate keeps streams warm and switches aggressively between them, which is exactly what you want when two games are on at once.
