IPTV on a MAG box, the old-fashioned way
Portal boxes work differently from everything else here. There is no app to install and no username to type. You send us the box's MAC address, we register it at our end, and the box pulls its channel list down on the next restart.
Before you start
- A MAG 254, 256, 322, 324, 349, 420, 540 or any Stalker portal box
- A Formuler, Infomir or similar device in portal mode, if you prefer that interface
- The box connected to your network, ideally by Ethernet
- The MAC address from the sticker underneath, or from the settings menu
- About nine minutes, most of which is waiting for us to register it

Setting up MAG or portal box
Follow these in order. If a step does not match what you see on screen, send us a photo and we will tell you which one you are actually on.
Find the MAC address
It is printed on a sticker underneath the box, in the format 00:1A:79:XX:XX:XX. If the sticker has worn off, go to the system settings menu on the box and look under System Information or Device Information. Every MAG shows it there.
Send it to us on WhatsApp
Send the full MAC address, including the colons, and tell us which model box it is. Type it carefully or send a photo of the sticker: a single wrong character means the box will not activate and there is no error message telling you why.
Wait for us to register it
We tie that MAC address to your subscription at our end and confirm on WhatsApp. This is usually a few minutes. There is nothing for you to do while it happens, and nothing on the box will change until it is done.
Enter the portal URL
On the box, go to Settings, then System Settings, then Servers, then Portals. Put our portal URL into "Portal 1 URL" exactly as we sent it, and give Portal 1 a name, which can be anything. Leave Portal 2 empty.
Save and restart the portal
Press OK to save, then back out to System Settings and choose Restart Portal. The box reboots into the portal. This is the moment it either works or it does not, and it takes about thirty seconds.
Let the channel list load
The first load takes one to three minutes while the catalogue comes down. When it finishes you will see the category list with sport near the top, then the United States groups, cinema, kids and international.
Set the video output
In the box settings choose the resolution that matches your television, usually 1080p60 or 2160p if the box and set are both 4K. Setting this wrong is the usual reason a MAG box looks soft on a modern television.
Build favorites and test at peak
Use the FAV button on the remote to add the channels you actually watch. Then test a live sports channel in the evening, which is the only test that proves anything.

These cover almost every support message we get about MAG or portal box. Work down the list before messaging us and you will probably not need to.
Portal not found, or a blank screen
Nine times out of ten the portal URL has a typo, or a trailing slash where there should not be one. Retype it character by character from our message. The other possibility is that the MAC has not been registered yet, so check our WhatsApp confirmation came through.
The MAC address is not recognised
Send us a photo of the sticker rather than typing it. The characters 0 and O, and 8 and B, are easy to confuse on a worn label, and a single wrong character fails silently with no useful message.
It worked and then stopped
MAG boxes sometimes lose their portal settings after a firmware update or a power cut. Go back into Settings, Servers, Portals and check the URL is still there. If it is, restart the portal. If it is blank, retype it.
Everything is soft or the wrong shape
Video output setting. In the box settings pick the resolution your television actually is, usually 1080p60. MAG boxes default to conservative settings and do not detect the television the way a modern streaming stick does.
Buffering on an old MAG
MAG 250 and 254 are old hardware with modest decoders and they struggle with high-bitrate 4K feeds. Choose the Full HD version of a channel where one exists. If it is still rough, the box has reached its limit and an Android device is the fix.
The remote is unbearable
It is, and there is no fixing it. Most MAG boxes accept a USB or Bluetooth keyboard, which makes navigating the settings far less painful. For day to day use, build a favorites list so you rarely need to leave it.
The hardware that made IPTV work before apps existed
MAG boxes are the oldest technology on this site and in some ways the most reliable. They predate the app era: no store, no updates to break things, no interface redesign every eighteen months. A box plugged in, given a portal address and left alone will run for years. Plenty of our customers are on hardware they bought in 2016.
The trade is everything the app era brought. The interface is dated, the remote is awful, channel changes are slower than on an Android box, and there is no modern catch-up or recording. What you get in exchange is something that does one job and does not change.
The MAC address is the whole system
Everything about portal boxes follows from one design decision: the box identifies itself by its MAC address rather than by a login. That is why there is no username to type, why we need the MAC before anything works, and why moving to a new box means sending us a new MAC rather than just logging in somewhere else.
It also means a single mistyped character fails completely and silently. There is no error message saying the MAC is wrong, because from the portal's point of view an unregistered box simply does not exist. If something is not working, the MAC is the first thing to check and a photo of the sticker is the fastest way to check it.
Should you still buy one?
If you already own a MAG, keep using it. It works, we support it, and there is no reason to spend money replacing something that does the job. If you are buying from scratch, an Android box is cheaper and better in every measurable way: faster, better interface, more actively developed. About MAG or portal box
Why does a MAG box need my MAC address?
Because there is no login. The portal identifies the box by its MAC address instead of a username and password, which is how this generation of hardware was designed. A MAC address is a local network identifier and reveals nothing about you personally.
Can I move my subscription to a different MAG box?
Yes. Send us the new MAC address on WhatsApp and we will move the registration across. It takes a few minutes and there is no charge. The old box stops working the moment the new one is registered.
Should I buy a MAG box in 2026?
Probably not. They were excellent in their day and they are rock solid if you already own one, but an Android box costs less, changes channels faster and has a far better interface. Buy a MAG only if you specifically want the portal interface.
Can I get the MAG interface without a MAG box?
Yes. Smart STB on a Samsung or LG emulates a portal box, MAC address and all, for a small one-off fee. Some people prefer the portal interface to app-based players and this is how they keep it.
